Saw a fun t-shirt yesterday. It said "Be naughty. Save Santa the trip."

Tour De France - 2 days...
Well, allright! Lance gears up for what's sure to be a good fight this year. It's the centennial of the Tour, and the fanfare is bigger than ever.

"...as I've said many times - for me it's not about winning a fifth one or a fifth consecutive one, it's just about trying to win this one. I'm really not interested in the streak or continuing the streak, or trying to break a record, but I am however very interested in trying to win again."

After a couple of years of scandals, and with Lance's bid for another consecutive win, this year's tour is primed to be a special one. He wants to nail the time trials this season. Since Lance seems to be in perfect form, there's speculation about whether his team can carry him to victory. As usual, Lance focuses on the performance more than the hype.

OLN will have daily coverage. [OLN Tour De France site]

More Departures

Kate Hepburn and Buddy Hackett – sorry to see them go. They were marvelous performers, and gave a lot of drama and smiles to this world.

Strom Thurmund and Lester Maddox – imagine two symbols of America's racist, segregationist past checking out at the same time. Like George Wallace, the coverage of Thurmund's death tended to gloss over the slime in Thurmond's past. Remember, this is the guy that was the subject of the comments that got Trent Lott bounced, and the bizarre spin-fest that led up to it. Yet the Republicans, including our Vice President, were busy falling all over themselves to call him a patriot. I mean the guy was a decorated war hero, after all – and the oldest fossil in the Congress until a few days ago.

I googled old Strom, and found this on ericfrancis.com:

Old Uncle Strom spent the better part of his century on Earth engineering the conservative takeover of reality, including importing the Republican party to the south which helped the GOP win numerous presidential erections in the past 40 years despite repeated scandals. That takeover included stacking the federal courts, including of course the Supreme Court, with right-wing justices. Then they go and legalize gay sodomy. They make butt fucking the law of the land.

Dropping dead is a fair, even understandable, response.

The network news reports on passing of Maddox were short, if not sweet. The man was unrepentent to the end. But if you read the comments from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he had his supporters to the end. Pay particular attention to the comments from the politicos, and there are lots of them. Also worth noting, he was a Democrat.
